The South West is emerging as one of the most promising regions in the UK for new development and construction activity.
A combination of economic growth, housing demand and major investment projects is strengthening the regional construction pipeline and creating significant opportunities for contractors and suppliers.
The recently published West of England Growth Strategy outlines ambitious plans for Bristol, South Gloucestershire, Bath and North East Somerset. Its targets include the delivery of 7,750 new homes annually and significant economic growth over the next decade, supporting continued demand for South West construction projects.
Glenigan data highlights Bristol’s Temple Quarter as one of the region’s most significant concentrations of construction activity, with major residential-led regeneration projects progressing through the pipeline.
One of the largest schemes is the £350 million Temple Island development, which will transform a former diesel depot site and deliver around 520 homes, office buildings, hotels and commercial space (Project ID: 15410290).
Elsewhere in Temple Quarter, developer Dandara Living is preparing to begin construction on the £95 million Clarence Road Development, which will provide 435 build-to-rent homes (Project ID: 22199677).
Detailed plans have also been approved for the University of Bristol’s £175 million Temple Island Student Accommodation scheme, with work expected to commence later this year (Project ID: 19258743).
Commercial construction activity is also gathering pace. YTL Developments is expected to start work shortly on the £32.2 million One Brabazon Gateway development on the former Filton Airfield site. The project includes a seven-storey office building, retail space and a multi-storey car park (Project ID: 25474322).
The region will also benefit from completion of the £76.2 million North Filton Railway Station project later this year, improving connectivity and supporting future development opportunities (Project ID: 21449153).
Glenigan project data also highlights the scale of industrial investment taking place across the region. The £4 billion Agratas electric battery gigafactory near Bridgwater (pictured) remains one of the UK’s most significant industrial development projects.
The wider programme includes battery manufacturing facilities, a smart campus, transport infrastructure and associated development works (Project IDs: 23163969 and 13163531).
Further industrial development activity is planned through the £18 million Kenn Road Employment Allocation scheme in Clevedon. The project will deliver almost 20,000 sq m of employment space and is currently scheduled to begin next summer (Project ID: 13319496).
Together, these South West construction projects demonstrate the strength of the regional construction pipeline and the breadth of opportunities emerging across residential, commercial and industrial sectors. Glenigan data indicates that the region remains one of the UK’s most active development hotspots for future construction work.
