Costain to buy May Gurney for £178m

Costain is set to buy May Gurney in a move that will create a £1.6 billion infrastructure and services company.The tie up will see Costain acquire the entire share capital of May Gurney. The combined firm will have a market capitalisation of £378m and be named Costain May Gurney Plc. Costain directors expect the all-share merger, of which terms have been agreed, to be “double-digit earnings enhancing” for the company in 2014. The proposal is being put to shareholders on May 8.

Bam Construct's King's Cross scheme involves differing frames and BREEAM targets

Balfour Beatty nabs £17m London commercial job

Henderson Global Investors has awarded Balfour Beatty a £17m contract for an office and retail building in the Spitalfields area of  London. Balfour will demolish an existing seven storey building in Bishop’s Square to make way for the mixed use project. The new structure will incorporate the existing basement retaining walls, the tops of which will be trimmed down and a new capping beam cast on the top. The superstructure will consist of flat floor slabs at ground with post-tensioned RC floors above from levels one to six.

Morgan Sindall starts on Liverpool Science Park expansion

LSP is home to more than 70 science and knowledge sector companies in the city. It is a joint venture between Liverpool John Moores University, the University of Liverpool and Liverpool City Council. Morgan Sindall will build a new four-storey office block, to be named Innovation Centre 3 (ic3). The new building will be built on a 0.55 hectare site over the existing car park of Innovation Centre 1(ic1) and will provide 3,750m2 of office and laboratory facilities, spanning across all four floors.
