Carillion nabs first phase on £450m Birmingham scheme

Carillion has been chosen to carry out enabling and first phase infrastructure works on the £450m Paradise Circus development in Birmingham.

A programme of enabling works on the 17-acre project is due to start this autumn and phase one infrastructure works early next year.

The Paradise Circus project is being taken forward through the Paradise Circus General Partner Ltd joint venture between Birmingham City Council and Hermes Real Estate.

Vinci UK reports £33.8m pre-tax loss for building division

Vinci UK has reported a pre-tax loss of £33.8m in its building division for 2013, following a pre-tax loss of £6.6m in 2012.

In the contractor’s annual report for the year ended 31 December 2013, Vinci UK chairman John Stanion put the “significant trading losses” down to “the difficult trading environment”.

Overall, Vinci UK’s turnover in 2013 was up slightly to £1.25bn, compared with £1.11bn in the previous year.

However, pre-tax profits fell by 49 per cent to £7.1m last year, compared with £13.8m in 2012.

McLaren poaches Balfour Beatty commercial director

McLaren Construction has appointed former Balfour Beatty commercial director John Buteen as its new commercial director for major projects.

Mr Butten had spent 24 years at Balfour Beatty and had most recently been commercial director for its London and south major projects.

McLaren said he had previously worked on the Olympic Games Aquatic Centre contract negotiation, the new High Holborn Head Quarters for Amazon through AXA Developments and the leading bid and negotiation on Providence Wharf for Ballymore; a 45 storey residential tower in the Docklands.

Costain named for £84m Centrica gas project

Costain has announced it has won a contract with Centrica Energy for engineering procurement and construction services as part of Centrica Energy’s Barrow gas terminals project.

Centrica has invested £84m in the Barrow Terminals Project.

At Barrow, gas is processed from the North and South Morecambe and surrounding fields in the East Irish Sea.

The terminals project, scheduled to complete in Q4 2015, enables increased asset utilisation, provides compliance with future environmental requirements and supports field life extension within the East Irish Sea.
