Two areas have held up the construction industry for a long time but the current credit crunch is having very different effects on the commercial and residential sectors.
Mixed messages are emanating from the commercial sector, where orders are holding up better than expected and less space was available in May, according to Ingleby Trice Kennard’s floor space survey. However, that same survey shows that take up was 19 per cent down in May compared to April, which was particularly poor anyway, and that development activity is contracting.
The biggest concern is still the residential sector, which the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply cited as the main reason behind the largest fall in the history of the CIPS construction index.
